Hofstetten bei Brienz sits on the northern shore of Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland, a small village whose name most travellers encounter not on its own terms but as the address of one of the country's most quietly remarkable cultural institutions. The Ballenberg Open-Air Museum occupies a vast sweep of hillside just above the village, and it is the reason most visitors find themselves here at all. Spread across more than 100 hectares, Ballenberg gathers historic rural buildings relocated from across Switzerland, farmhouses, granaries, mills and workshops, each reconstructed and furnished to reflect the regional traditions of the canton it came from. Walking through it is less like visiting a museum and more like moving through a compressed version of the Swiss countryside across several centuries.

The lake itself sets the tone for the whole area. Lake Brienz is one of the clearest bodies of water in the Alps, its colour shifting between a pale turquoise and a deep mineral blue depending on the light and the season. The village sits quietly at the eastern end, away from the larger resort town of Brienz to the west, and the scale here is genuinely small. There are no grand promenades or cable-car terminals; the draw is the landscape and the sense that the Bernese Oberland has not been entirely smoothed into a tourist product.
