At the far tip of the Sorrentine Peninsula, where the land narrows and the cliffs drop sharply into the Tyrrhenian Sea, Massa Lubrense occupies one of the most quietly commanding positions on the entire Italian coastline. It sits just beyond Sorrento, close enough to share the peninsula's volcanic geology and lemon-grove terraces, yet far enough removed to have kept a pace and character that the more famous towns along this stretch have largely surrendered. The views across to Capri from its higher points are among the most consistently arresting in the region, and on clear days the silhouette of the island appears close enough to seem almost reachable by hand.

The comune is not a single settlement but a loose federation of small frazioni, each perched at a different elevation or tucked into a different fold of the coastline. Termini, Nerano, Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi and the main centre itself each have their own character, connected by narrow roads that wind through olive groves and past dry-stone walls draped in bougainvillea. Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi earns its name honestly: from its ridge, on a sufficiently clear afternoon, both the Gulf of Naples to the north and the Gulf of Salerno to the south are simultaneously visible, a geographical curiosity that has drawn travellers and painters for centuries.
