July is a curious month on Broadway. The Tony Awards are done, the spring openings have settled in, and the calendar pauses for breath before the autumn rush. So if you are planning a summer trip to New York, here is the honest picture: there are no new Broadway openings in July 2026, but three star-led limited runs are taking their final bows this month. If any of them were on your list, this is genuinely your last chance.
Here is everything closing, what is coming next, and how to catch the shows before the curtain comes down for good.
First, the openings: there aren't any (in July)
It is unusual, but true. No Broadway production has its first preview or opening night in July 2026. The summer slot between the Tonys and the autumn season is traditionally quiet, and this year the calendar is genuinely empty until August. The next new show to arrive is Paranormal Activity: A New Story, which begins previews at the August Wilson Theatre on 14 August and opens officially on 25 August 2026. So if you are after a brand-new opening, you are looking at late summer rather than July.
That makes July all about last chances. And what last chances they are.
Closing in July: three star turns taking their final bow
All three of July's closings are limited engagements built around major screen and stage names, the kind of run that was never going to stay forever. Once they are gone, they are gone.
Dog Day Afternoon — final performance 12 July
The stage adaptation of the 1975 true-crime classic has been one of the spring's hottest tickets, thanks to a pair of screen heavyweights: Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (of The Bear) lead the Brooklyn bank-heist drama at the August Wilson Theatre, directed by Rupert Goold. It plays its final performance on Sunday 12 July 2026. You can see availability for Dog Day Afternoon on tickadoo, from $70.20.
Proof — final performance 19 July

David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play about genius, grief and a contested mathematical proof returns to Broadway at the Booth Theatre in a revival led by Ayo Edebiri and Don Cheadle. It is a short, sharp, beautifully acted drama, and it closes on 19 July 2026. Check dates and availability for Proof, from $80.40.
Joe Turner's Come and Gone — final performance 26 July

August Wilson's lyrical 1911-set drama returns to the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, the same house where it premiered in 1988, in a revival directed by Debbie Allen and starring Taraji P. Henson and Cedric the Entertainer. A five-time Tony nominee this season, it is the last of the month's closings, taking its final bow on 26 July 2026. See availability for Joe Turner's Come and Gone, from $55.68.
A single New York weekend in mid-July could feasibly catch two of these three, with Proof's closing falling right in the middle of the month.
Still running if you miss them
If your trip lands after these final dates, do not worry. Broadway's long-running blockbusters, the perennial Lion Kings, Wickeds, Hamiltons and MJs, play right through the summer, and Cole Escola's smash comedy Oh, Mary! continues well beyond July.
