At the far tip of the Sorrentine Peninsula, where the land narrows and the cliffs drop sharply into the Tyrrhenian Sea, Massa Lubrense occupies one of the most quietly commanding positions on the entire Italian coastline. It sits just beyond Sorrento, close enough to share the peninsula's volcanic geology and lemon-grove terraces, yet far enough removed to have kept a pace and character that the more famous towns along this stretch have largely surrendered. Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi earns its name honestly: from its ridge, on a sufficiently clear afternoon, both the Gulf of Naples to the north and the Gulf of Salerno to the south are simultaneously visible, a geographical curiosity that has drawn travellers and painters for centuries.
