Valeggio sul Mincio 指南
Valeggio sul Mincio sits on the southern edge of the Veneto, where the Mincio river cuts through a landscape of low morainic hills left behind by ancient glaciers retreating from the Alps. The town is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes, yet it carries a disproportionate weight of history and natural beauty. The medieval Scaligeri bridge, a fortified causeway stretching nearly seven hundred metres across the river valley, was built in the fourteenth century under the Visconti and remains one of the most striking pieces of military architecture in northern Italy. Above the town, the Castello Scaligero watches over the valley from a ridge, and the combination of fortress, bridge, and river gives Valeggio a silhouette that feels genuinely medieval rather than merely preserved.
The town is also, quietly but seriously, famous for tortellini. Local tradition holds that the pasta was born here, shaped to resemble the knot in a ribbon tied by a nymph named Silvia around the wrist of a Visconti soldier. Every June, the Festa del Nodo d'Amore draws thousands of people to dine at long tables set on the Visconteo bridge itself, a spectacle that has been running for decades and that locals treat with considerable civic pride. The restaurants clustered around the old centre take the pasta equally seriously throughout the year, and a plate of Valeggio tortellini in broth is as good a reason as any to make the detour from Verona or Lake Garda, both of which lie within easy reach.
