Livraria Lello is one of the most celebrated bookshops in the world, standing on Rua das Carmelitas in central Porto. Its neo-Gothic facade, ornate carved woodwork, and sweeping red staircase have made it a landmark of Portuguese cultural life and a pilgrimage site for book lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike. The interior, designed by engineer Francisco Xavier Esteves and completed in the early twentieth century, features stained-glass skylights and intricately decorated shelving that give the space the atmosphere of a cathedral devoted to literature. J. K. Rowling, who lived in Porto during the early 1990s, has cited the library as an influence on her writing.

Visitors today can explore the bookshop at their own pace with priority entrance, bypassing the queues that regularly form outside. The current experience also includes access to the Lello Foundation Museum, which traces the history of the building and its place in Portuguese literary culture, with a complimentary book included.
