The Jewish Cultural Quarter in Amsterdam brings together several of the city's most significant sites of Jewish heritage on and around Jonas Daniël Meijerplein, a square that has long held deep meaning for Amsterdam's Jewish community. The quarter grew from a neighbourhood that was once the centre of Jewish life in the Netherlands, a history that encompasses centuries of scholarship, trade, and cultural contribution, as well as the devastating losses of the Second World War.
Today the quarter encompasses the Jewish Museum, housed in a complex of four former Ashkenazi synagogues dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the Portuguese Synagogue, one of the largest and best-preserved synagogues in the world, completed in 1675 and still lit by candlelight during services. Visitors can explore these sites individually or through a Combo Pass that covers the quarter's main attractions. Together they offer a layered account of Jewish life in Amsterdam across more than four centuries.
