Sobre aquest lloc

The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano holds a distinction that sets it apart from every other church in the world: it is the cathedral of Rome and the official seat of the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. Older than St Peter's Basilica, it stands on the Caelian Hill as the mother church of the Roman Catholic faith, a title formally inscribed above its entrance. The current building reflects centuries of reconstruction, most notably the seventeenth-century interior by Francesco Borromini, who transformed the ancient structure into a masterpiece of Roman Baroque architecture. The towering nave, the colossal statues of the Apostles, and the gilded ceiling draw visitors from across the world.

Today, guided tours pair the Basilica with the Vatican Museums, offering a structured way to move between two of Rome's most significant religious and artistic sites. The tour brings context to the mosaics, the papal history embedded in the walls, and the broader story of Christianity's long presence in the city.
