Biester Palace stands in Sintra, the UNESCO-listed hill town west of Lisbon long celebrated for its romantic palaces and forested estates. The palace was built in the nineteenth century for Henrique Biester, a Portuguese lawyer and bibliophile, and its architecture blends neo-Gothic and Romantic influences that were fashionable among Sintra's wealthy residents of that era. Surrounded by a dense park of exotic trees and ornamental gardens, the estate reflects the taste for picturesque landscape design that defined the Sintra of its period.
Today visitors can explore the palace and its grounds through the Biester Palace and Park experience, moving through rooms that retain much of their original decorative character and out into gardens where centuries-old specimens create a distinctive atmosphere. The estate sits within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, placing it among one of Europe's more unusual concentrations of nineteenth-century Romantic architecture within a protected natural landscape.
