Kronborg Castle is a Renaissance landmark in Elsinore, on the northeastern tip of the Danish island of Zealand, overlooking the narrow strait between Denmark and Sweden. Built in its current form between 1574 and 1585 under King Frederick II, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 in recognition of its outstanding military architecture and its role in controlling Baltic sea trade for centuries. The castle is also internationally associated with Shakespeare's Hamlet, set within its walls, making it one of the most culturally layered fortresses in northern Europe. Elsinore is around 45 minutes by train from Copenhagen, and the castle sits directly at the water's edge, its cannon-lined ramparts facing the Swedish coast.
Entry covers access to the castle and castle yard, the grand ballroom, the Renaissance Chapel, and the casemates, a labyrinthine network of underground passages where a statue of the sleeping Norse hero Holger Danske stands. A temporary exhibition is also included. Guided tours run on select days and can be confirmed at the castle shop on arrival. The site is explored at your own pace, with no fixed route, allowing time in each of the main rooms and along the outer ramparts. Tickets are non-refundable and wheelchair access is not available at this site. Check the schedule before visiting, as opening hours vary by season.
Arrive in good time before you plan to start exploring, as the castle covers a substantial area across multiple floors and spaces. Collect any information you need from the castle shop on arrival, where you can also check whether a guided tour is running on the day. The visit is self-guided, so you can move through the rooms at your own pace.
