The Lisbon Belém District Self-Guided Walking Tour is a two-hour self-guided route through one of Lisbon's most historically significant neighbourhoods, starting at 136 Avenida da Índia. Belém, once a modest fishing village on the Tagus estuary, became the departure point for Portugal's great maritime expeditions in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the architecture left behind reflects that era directly. The district is home to the Torre de Belém, the Jerónimos Monastery, and the Monument to the Discoveries, all concentrated within walking distance of one another and among the most visited sites in Lisbon.
The route is delivered through the Explorial App on your own smartphone, so you set the pace and linger where you choose. Along the way, the tour covers the Manueline architectural details of the monastery, the riverside fortifications of the tower, and the broader story of Portugal's age of discovery. A Belém custard tart, the pastel de nata, is included, connecting the visit to the neighbourhood's culinary history, as the recipe originated at the Jerónimos Monastery in the 19th century. Tickets cover app access and the tart; visitors need their own internet connection and a compatible smartphone. The tour is not wheelchair accessible. Cancellation terms apply before a specified date, confirmed at booking.
