Museum of The Canals

The Museum of the Canals tells the story of Amsterdam through its most defining feature: the network of waterways that shaped the city's trade, architecture, and daily life across four centuries. Housed in a historic canal house on the Prinsengracht, the museum traces how Amsterdam's engineers and merchants dug, expanded, and maintained the canal ring that now forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Exhibits move from the Golden Age ambitions that drove the original construction to the practical mechanics of locks, bridges, and houseboats that keep the system alive today.

Alongside the permanent collection, visitors can combine a museum visit with the Cultuur Ferry, a boat service that connects cultural institutions along the waterfront and offers a direct experience of the canals themselves.
