Sobre el recinto

Acerca de este lugar

The New Church, or Nieuwe Kerk in Dutch, stands on Dam Square in the centre of Amsterdam, directly beside the Royal Palace. Despite its name, the church is one of the older buildings in the city, with construction beginning in the late fourteenth century following a fire that destroyed an earlier place of worship on the site. It has served as the coronation and inauguration church for Dutch monarchs for centuries, and the interior retains its grand Gothic architecture, including carved wooden choir stalls, ornate organ cases, and the tomb of the naval hero Michiel de Ruyter.

Today the building functions as an exhibition space rather than an active parish church, hosting major international cultural and historical exhibitions throughout the year. Its location on Dam Square places it at the symbolic centre of Amsterdam, steps from the National Monument and within easy reach of the city's principal museums and canals. The current programme at The New Church Amsterdam continues this tradition of presenting large-scale exhibitions that draw on art, history, and culture from across the world.
