À propos du lieu

À propos de ce lieu

The Ancient Agora of Athens occupies the broad open ground north-west of the Acropolis where Athenian civic life took shape over more than a millennium. This was the commercial, political, and philosophical centre of the ancient city: the place where Socrates debated with citizens, where the first democratic institutions of the Western world were administered, and where the Stoa of Attalos once lined the eastern edge of the square. That stoa, reconstructed in the 1950s by the American School of Classical Studies, now houses the Agora Museum, displaying pottery, bronze objects, and everyday artefacts recovered during decades of excavation.

Visitors walking the site today pass the remarkably well-preserved Temple of Hephaestus, one of the most complete ancient Greek temples surviving anywhere, as well as the foundations of the Tholos, the Metroon, and the Middle Stoa. Entry tickets are available with an optional audio guide or a digital Hellenic Heritage Guide, both of which trace the layers of Athenian history visible across the archaeological landscape.
