À propos du lieu

À propos de ce lieu

Ostia Antica Archaeological Park preserves the ruins of ancient Rome's principal harbour city, which once served as the commercial and military gateway to the Mediterranean. Situated roughly 25 kilometres south-west of central Rome, the site contains some of the best-preserved Roman urban remains in the world, offering a far less crowded alternative to Pompeii while arguably matching it in historical depth. Visitors walk through a largely intact street grid, past multi-storey apartment blocks known as insulae, bathhouses decorated with intricate mosaics, temples, warehouses, and a theatre that still hosts performances during the summer season.

The park spans a considerable area, meaning a thorough visit rewards those who allow several hours to explore at their own pace. The on-site museum houses sculptures, inscriptions, and everyday objects recovered during excavations that began in earnest during the nineteenth century and continued through the twentieth. Tickets to Ostia Antica Archaeological Park grant access to this layered landscape, where the rhythms of an ancient port city remain legible in stone, brick, and mosaic across every turn.
