A 35-minute guided tour of the Avoca Mill in County Wicklow, one of Ireland's oldest working woollen mills, in operation since 1723.
Avoca Mill Guided Tours is a guided tour of one of Ireland's oldest working woollen mills, departing from Avoca Village in County Wicklow, roughly an hour south of Dublin. The mill at Avoca has been in continuous operation since 1723, making it one of the longest-running textile businesses in the world. The 35-minute tour takes visitors through the full production floor, where working weavers explain the process from raw wool to finished cloth, using a combination of traditional handlooms and modern weaving machines. Demonstrations are subject to weaver availability on the day.
The tour covers the weaving process in detail, including how natural fibres are prepared, dyed, and woven into the colourful throws and textiles that Avoca is known for. After the guided section, visitors are free to browse the onsite retail store, which stocks the mill's full range of woollen products. A café on site serves freshly baked goods and homemade lunch dishes, though food and drink are not included in the ticket price. Tickets cover the factory tour only. For more things to do in Dublin and the surrounding area, a range of options are available to suit most itineraries.
The guided tour runs for approximately 35 minutes, so arrive in good time before your scheduled start. The tour begins in Avoca Village, so make sure you know your meeting point before you set off. Note that weaver demonstrations are subject to staff availability on the day.
The mill is a working factory, so follow your guide's instructions and stay with the group throughout. Out of respect for the weavers and their work, keep noise to a minimum and avoid touching equipment unless invited to do so.
Once the guided section is complete, you are free to browse the onsite retail store at your own pace. The mill also has a café serving cakes and lunch dishes, though food and drink are not included in your ticket.
