Duomo di Milano

The Duomo di Milano is one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in the world, rising from the centre of Milan in a forest of marble spires, flying buttresses, and more than three thousand statues. Construction began in 1386 under Gian Galeazzo Visconti and continued across nearly five centuries, drawing architects and craftsmen from across Europe before its facade was finally completed under Napoleon in the early nineteenth century. The cathedral is dedicated to the Nativity of Saint Mary and sits at the geographical and symbolic heart of the city, with the zero-kilometre marker of Italy's road network set into the piazza at its feet.

Visitors today can explore the cathedral's vast interior, with its soaring nave, medieval stained glass, and the gilded statue of the Madonnina crowning the tallest spire at ninety metres.
