Informazioni su questo luogo
Monserrate Palace stands in the hills of Sintra, roughly 30 kilometres west of Lisbon, within the UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape that makes this corner of Portugal one of the most architecturally remarkable in Europe. The palace is a nineteenth-century Romantic confection that blends Gothic, Moorish, and Indian influences into a single extraordinary building, its ornate facade rising above terraced gardens that were shaped by successive waves of wealthy British and Portuguese patrons. Sir Francis Cook, who acquired the estate in 1856, commissioned the architect James Knowles the Younger to transform an earlier structure into the elaborate villa visible today, and the surrounding botanical gardens were developed with plants gathered from across the globe.
Inside, elaborately carved stonework lines the interconnecting rooms, and the palace's distinctive domed rotunda draws the eye upward through layers of interlocking arches. Visitors can explore the palace and its grounds through a guided tour that includes skip-the-line entry, allowing more time to take in the detail of both the architecture and the extraordinary landscape that surrounds it.
