Vaux-le-Vicomte is a 17th-century château near Melun, roughly 55 kilometres south-east of Paris, widely regarded as the architectural and horticultural blueprint for the Palace of Versailles. Commissioned by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV's finance minister, and completed in 1661, it brought together architect Louis Le Vau, painter Charles Le Brun, and landscape designer André Le Nôtre in their first major collaboration. The result is one of the most complete examples of French Baroque estate design, with formal gardens stretching nearly two kilometres from the main façade. Inside, visitors move through the grand salons, the painted ceilings of the King's Chamber, and the formal reception rooms, each explained by the audio guide at a self-directed pace. The Carriage Museum, housed in the estate's outbuildings, displays a collection of horse-drawn vehicles spanning several centuries. Outside, Le Nôtre's formal French gardens feature clipped parterres, fountains, canals, and sculpted terraces that demonstrate the geometric principles he later applied at Versailles. Entry covers access to the château interior, the Carriage Museum, and the full garden circuit, with the audio guide available in multiple languages. Seasonal evening candlelight events run on selected Saturdays and are ticketed separately.
