Founded in the 9th century, the castle served as the seat of Bohemian kings and Holy Roman emperors before becoming the official residence of the president of Czechoslovakia after 1918. The complex covers roughly 70,000 square metres and contains palaces, churches, galleries, and lanes within its walls.

The audio guide provides orientation and context as you move through the grounds independently. A brief introduction and orientation session is included on arrival, though a live guide does not accompany the full visit.

What to expect

The minibus departs from Maiselova 5 in the Old Town and drops you at the castle, cutting out the uphill walk from the city centre. Once inside, entry covers four key sites: St. Vitus Cathedral, the Gothic cathedral begun in 1344 whose nave houses the tombs of Bohemian kings; the Old Royal Palace, which contains a copy of the Bohemian crown jewels; the Basilica of St. George, a Romanesque church dating to the 10th century; and Golden Lane, a row of small coloured houses historically linked to 16th-century craftsmen and, by legend, alchemists. The audio guide is accessed online, so earphones are not provided and should be brought separately. The minibus transfer is one-way only; return travel is arranged independently.

Prague Castle and getting there

Perched above the Vltava river in the Hradcany district, the castle complex has been continuously occupied since the 9th century and is among the largest ancient castle complexes in the world. The transfer departs from Maiselova 5, close to the Old Town Square, making it a practical starting point for visitors already exploring central Prague. From the castle, tram lines on Hradcanske namesti provide a straightforward return to the city centre.
