Matthew Bourne's Romeo and Juliet Tickets
Matthew Bourne's Romeo and Juliet is a radical reimagining of Shakespeare's tragedy told entirely through dance, created by the choreographer and his company New Adventures. Setting Prokofiev's score against a charged contemporary world, it strips the story back to its raw heart: first love, desire and the forces that try to crush both. About the production
Bourne relocates the lovers to the Verona Institute, a closed world where a group of young people are confined and watched over, their spirit and individuality under constant pressure. Against that backdrop Romeo and Juliet meet and fall headlong for one another, while Prokofiev's music, in new orchestrations by Terry Davies, drives the story from tenderness to violence. Designed by Lez Brotherston with lighting by Paule Constable, the production is built around a young company of dancers and grew out of New Adventures' work nurturing early-career talent.
What to expect
This is contemporary dance theatre rather than classical ballet, with the whole story carried by movement and Prokofiev's score and no spoken word. The piece runs for about 1 hour and 50 minutes including one interval and is recommended for ages 14 and over, with scenes of an intense and sometimes disturbing nature. In London the production has played at Sadler's Wells, and it has toured widely across the UK.
