About the venue

About this venue

The Churchill War Rooms occupy the original underground bunker beneath Westminster from which Winston Churchill and his War Cabinet directed Britain's effort during the Second World War. The complex was sealed at the end of the war in 1945 and remained largely untouched, preserving the Map Room, the Cabinet Room, and Churchill's private quarters almost exactly as they were left. Managed by the Imperial War Museum, the site opened to the public in 1984 and has since expanded to include the Churchill Museum, a biographical gallery dedicated to his life and legacy.

Visitors can explore the warren of subterranean rooms with a standard entry ticket or join a guided tour that provides deeper context about the wartime decisions made here. Options extend beyond the bunker itself, with audio tours covering the surrounding political landscape of Westminster and combined excursions pairing the War Rooms with Blenheim Palace, Churchill's birthplace in Oxfordshire. The site sits on King Charles Street, a short walk from Parliament Square and the Thames.
