Tentang tempat

Mengenai tempat ini

The Monastery of Saint Vincent de Fora stands on one of Lisbon's oldest hills, in the Alfama district, overlooking the Tagus estuary and the city's terracotta rooftops. Commissioned by King Philip I of Portugal and completed in the early seventeenth century, it was designed by the Italian architect Filippo Terzi in a restrained Mannerist style that marked a turning point in Portuguese religious architecture. The church facade, with its twin towers and classical proportions, remains one of the most recognisable in Lisbon.

Beyond the church itself, the monastery complex holds a remarkable collection of azulejo tile panels depicting the fables of La Fontaine, lining the walls of the former refectory in vivid blue and white. The pantheon of the House of Braganza, the royal dynasty that ruled Portugal from 1640 until the end of the monarchy in 1910, is housed within the monastery, making it a site of considerable historical and dynastic significance. Entry tickets are available for visitors wishing to explore the church, the cloisters, the tile galleries, and the royal tombs.
