World of Discoveries

World of Discoveries is an interactive museum in Porto dedicated to the Portuguese Age of Discovery, the extraordinary period between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries when Portuguese explorers charted vast stretches of Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Located in the Ribeira district, the museum occupies a converted soap factory on the banks of the Douro, and its interior takes visitors through reconstructed streets, markets, and harbour scenes that evoke the world as Portuguese navigators encountered it.

The experience combines theatrical scenography with a boat ride through recreated landscapes, making it one of the more immersive history attractions in the city. Current offerings include standard entry tickets and interactive digital exhibition tickets, which layer additional multimedia content onto the physical displays. The museum draws on Portugal's defining contribution to world exploration, presenting figures such as Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral within the broader story of how Lisbon and Porto became the launching points for a new understanding of the globe.
