Herculaneum: Guided Tour is a two-hour guided visit to the ancient Roman site of Herculaneum, near Naples. Buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, Herculaneum was preserved under volcanic material in remarkable condition, leaving intact structures, coloured frescoes, wooden furniture, and everyday objects that rarely survive at other Roman sites. Smaller and less visited than Pompeii, it offers a more concentrated look at Roman urban life, with well-preserved insulae, bathhouses, and private residences still showing original decoration. The starting point is the Biglietteria Ercolano in Ercolano, a short distance from Naples.
The guided tour is led by a live guide who walks the group through the site, explaining the layout of the ancient town, the social history of its residents, and the circumstances of the eruption. Highlights include the House of the Mosaic Atrium, the House of the Deer, the Suburban Baths, and carbonised wooden elements that survived due to the particular nature of the volcanic flow. After the guided section concludes, visitors are free to remain inside the archaeological area and explore independently. Entry tickets and the live guide are included in the booking; food, drinks, and transport to the site are not.
