A guided walking tour of Kamakura combining Shinto shrines, a cave temple, a forest trail, and the 13th-century Great Buddha.
The Kamakura Historical Walking Tour with the Great Buddha is a guided day tour from Tokyo, taking in the historic town of Kamakura across roughly half a day on foot. Kamakura served as Japan's de facto political capital during the Kamakura shogunate period from 1185 to 1333, and the town retains a dense concentration of shrines, temples, and monuments from that era. The tour begins at a shrine known for its rows of torii gates and fox statues, where the guide covers the role of foxes in Shinto belief, the significance of the deity Inari, and correct shrine etiquette. From there, the group moves to a cave temple associated with the practice of washing coins to invite good fortune, a custom rooted in a wordplay tradition in Japanese.
The route then follows a 30 to 40 minute forest trail through varied terrain before arriving at the Great Buddha of Kamakura, a bronze seated figure standing at roughly 11 metres that has stood in the open air since the 13th century, its original enclosing hall having been destroyed by storms. The tour concludes at a temple-run restaurant serving local dishes including udon and vegetable curry. Guides are certified and selected for cultural knowledge and language ability. Booking covers the guided walking tour; for more things to do in Tokyo and the surrounding region, a full range of experiences is available.
