Originally commissioned by Cardinal Durini in the late 1700s, Villa del Balbianello Park preserves the legacy of explorer Guido Monzino on Lake Como.
Villa del Balbianello Park is an attraction on the western shore of Lake Como, roughly an hour from Milan, set on a wooded promontory that has drawn visitors since Cardinal Durini commissioned the property in the late eighteenth century as a retreat for literary leisure. The villa passed to explorer and entrepreneur Guido Monzino in the twentieth century, who redesigned it as a personal archive of his expeditions, including his ascent of Mount Everest as the first Italian to reach the summit.
Visitors explore the villa's loggia, terraced gardens, and interior rooms filled with Monzino's collected artefacts, maps, and mountaineering equipment, all preserved as he left them. The grounds offer views across the lake and are frequently recognised as a filming location for period productions. Entry covers one hour of access to the park and villa interiors, starting from Via Guido Monzino 1. Note that the site has no wheelchair access. For more things to do in Milan and the surrounding lakes region, the city offers a range of day-trip options.
