Embassy Of The Free Mind

The Embassy of the Free Mind occupies the Bibliotheca Philosophica Hermetica, a historic canal house on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam. The collection housed here is one of the most significant in the world devoted to Hermetic philosophy, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, and the Western esoteric tradition, built largely from the private library assembled by Amsterdam businessman Joost Ritman from the 1950s onwards. Rare manuscripts, early printed books, and alchemical texts fill the shelves, many of them predating the seventeenth century.

Visitors explore the collection through a self-guided experience that pairs access to the reading rooms and exhibition spaces with a dedicated audio guide. The building itself, a restored merchant's house on one of Amsterdam's most celebrated canals, adds a layer of atmosphere that is inseparable from the material on display.
