About the venue

About this venue

Palma Cathedral, known locally as La Seu, rises dramatically above the waterfront of Palma de Mallorca, its Gothic buttresses and honey-coloured sandstone forming one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the western Mediterranean. Construction began in the thirteenth century on the site of a former mosque, following the Christian reconquest of Mallorca, and continued for several centuries, producing a nave of extraordinary height that floods with coloured light through the celebrated rose windows. Antoni Gaudí contributed a significant interior intervention in the early twentieth century, repositioning the choir and adding his distinctive organic ironwork, making La Seu one of the few Gothic cathedrals to bear his mark.

Today the cathedral functions as both an active place of worship and a major cultural monument open to visitors. The Mallorca Cathedral experience allows guests to explore the interior at their own pace, taking in the medieval chapels, the episcopal museum, and the interplay of light that changes dramatically with the hour and season. La Seu remains the architectural and spiritual centrepiece of Palma's historic old town.
