Visit the 12th-century UNESCO World Heritage site, the Alcobaça Monastery in Portugal with an entry ticket or a Lisbon Card.
Alcobaça Monastery is a medieval landmark in Alcobaça, central Portugal, founded by King Afonso Henriques in 1153 to fulfil a vow made before the Battle of Santarém. Construction of the current Gothic church began in the late 12th century, and the complex was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989. The monastery is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Cistercian Gothic architecture in Europe, shaped in part by the influence of Clairvaux Abbey, and its church remains the largest medieval building in Portugal.
Entry covers access to the main church, the Royal Pantheon housing the ornate 14th-century tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, the Gothic cloister of Dom Dinis, the Chapter House, the Monks' Dormitory, and the monumental kitchen with its diverted river channel. Tickets are available as standard entry or as part of the Lisbon Sintra attractions pass, including the Lisbon Card, which grants free or discounted access. Check the Alcobaça Monastery schedule for current opening hours and any seasonal closures before visiting.
