Tropical Islands

Tropical Islands is an indoor tropical resort located roughly 60 kilometres south of Berlin, housed inside one of the largest freestanding halls in the world. The structure was originally built as an airship hangar for the Cargolifter project in Brand, Brandenburg, and its sheer scale, a floor area of more than five hectares beneath a single arching roof, makes it unlike almost any other indoor space in Europe. When the Cargolifter company collapsed in the early 2000s, the hangar was repurposed as a year-round tropical resort, opening to the public in 2004.

Inside, visitors find a rainforest environment, lagoons, waterslides, and sandy beaches maintained at a constant warm temperature regardless of the season outside. The resort draws on the building's extraordinary volume to recreate a convincing tropical atmosphere, complete with tropical plants and a permanent indoor climate.
