Gran Canaria's southern coast has long drawn visitors seeking reliable sunshine and a gentler Atlantic, and Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria sits at the quieter, more sheltered end of that promise. Carved into a steep ravine that opens directly onto a calm, crescent-shaped bay, the resort occupies a landscape that feels almost theatrical in its contrast: ochre cliffs and dry hillsides dropping sharply to a marina packed with sailing boats and charter vessels. The beach itself is artificial, its sand imported decades ago, yet the bay's natural protection from the prevailing winds makes it one of the most reliably swimmable stretches on the island.

The town grew rapidly from the 1970s onwards as part of the broader development of Gran Canaria's tourist south, and it retains a character shaped almost entirely by leisure rather than history. There is no old quarter to wander, no cathedral square to anchor an evening stroll. What Puerto Rico offers instead is a concentrated ease: a marina promenade lined with restaurants, a compact commercial centre, and direct access to the water in a way that larger resorts like Maspalomas, a short drive east, cannot quite replicate. The surrounding hills are laced with walking paths that reward those willing to climb above the resort's busier lower levels.
