The railway, opened in 1889, operates at gradients of up to 48 degrees and runs seasonally from May to November, while the gondola and aerial cable car sections provide year-round access from Kriens.

The round trip typically combines the cogwheel railway in one direction with the cable car and gondola descent, or vice versa.
