The railway, opened in 1889, operates at gradients of up to 48 degrees and runs seasonally from May to November, while the gondola and aerial cable car sections provide year-round access from Kriens.

Visitors travel through open alpine terrain, with panoramic views across Lake Lucerne and the surrounding peaks on clear days. The round trip typically combines the cogwheel railway in one direction with the cable car and gondola descent, or vice versa.
