À propos du lieu

À propos de ce lieu

Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is one of Venice's most distinctive architectural landmarks, tucked into a quiet courtyard just south of the Rialto. The palazzo takes its name from the Venetian dialect word for snail, a reference to the extraordinary external spiral staircase that winds upward through a series of open loggias in Gothic, Renaissance, and Byzantine styles. This layering of influences, rare even by Venetian standards, makes the structure a remarkable document of the city's architectural ambitions at the turn of the fifteenth century.

The Contarini family, one of Venice's most prominent patrician dynasties, commissioned the palazzo as a private residence, and the staircase was almost certainly intended as a statement of wealth and civic pride. Today the building is open to visitors, who can climb the loggia staircase and take in views across the surrounding rooftops and canals. Entry tickets are available for independent exploration of the courtyard and tower, offering a close encounter with one of the city's most photographed and least crowded architectural treasures.
