Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo

Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is one of Venice's most distinctive architectural landmarks, tucked into a quiet courtyard just south of the Rialto. The palazzo takes its name from the Venetian dialect word for snail, a reference to the extraordinary external spiral staircase that winds upward through a series of open loggias in Gothic, Renaissance, and Byzantine styles. This layering of influences, rare even by Venetian standards, makes the structure a remarkable document of the city's architectural ambitions at the turn of the fifteenth century.

The Contarini family, one of Venice's most prominent patrician dynasties, commissioned the palazzo as a private residence, and the staircase was almost certainly intended as a statement of wealth and civic pride. Today the building is open to visitors, who can climb the loggia staircase and take in views across the surrounding rooftops and canals.
