Pena Palace is a 19th-century Romanticist palace set within the Sintra hills, roughly 30 kilometres north-west of Lisbon. Commissioned by King Ferdinand II and completed in 1854, it combines Gothic, Moorish, Manueline, and Renaissance architectural styles across its towers, battlements, and brightly coloured facades. The palace sits at the highest point of the Sintra Mountains and is one of the most visited Lisbon Sintra attractions, drawing visitors for its architecture and the forested park that surrounds it.
Entry with an audio guide allows visitors to explore the palace interiors and the wider park at their own pace. The palace rooms include the Arab Room, the Stag Room, and the royal kitchens, each furnished largely as they were in the late 19th century. The park covers over 200 hectares of exotic trees, walking paths, and viewpoints, including the Valley of the Lakes. Tickets cover admission to both the palace and the park, with the audio guide providing commentary on the architecture, royal history, and landscape features throughout the visit.
